News and Notes

Nativity Fast (November 15 through December 24): The Nativity Fast readies us for the celebration of the Nativity (the Birth of Jesus Christ) on December 25 through renewed effort at practicing the spiritual exercise program Jesus gave us: almsgiving, prayer, and fasting (Matthew 6:1-18). These three practices turn our attention and appetites away from ourselves (the ego) and redirect them toward others (God and neighbor), enabling us to grow in the love that Jesus commands in his gospel. It is also a fitting time to take stock of our lives and unburden our consciences in the sacrament of confession, which is available after any worship service or my appointment with our parish presbyter, Father Michael Shuster.

Saint Nicholas Prayer Services: We kick off the Nativity Fast with the first of our Saint Nicholas Prayer Services at 12 noon, followed by a fun "Seven Question Quiz" to reacquaint ourselves with the basics of our faith. The Church honors Saint Nicholas, fourth-century bishop of Myra (now in Turkey), on December 6. Known for protecting the young, providing for the poor, rescuing the innocent, and righting wrongs, he is the beloved patron saint of the people of Carpathian Rus'. Additional Saint Nicholas Prayer Services will take place at 6 p.m. on November 20 and at 12 noon on November 29. Come join us in celebrating this remarkable man of God!

Thanksgiving Day (November 22): Thanksgiving Day bids us to count our blessings and remember their source: God. Make time during this special day to give thanks to God for the bounty of his earth and all the good in our lives. "Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His love lasts forever!" (Psalms 118:1).

Put Compassion Into Action: Jesus said how we treat those in need is how we treat him (Matthew 25:31-46). Practice the love of neighbor he commanded in his gospel (Mark 12:31) by bringing your weekly gifts to church on Sunday to help disadvantaged children, women and men locally through the Dawn Center and Westside Elementary School. Items needed: canned and nonperishable food, personal hygiene products, baby care supplies, school supplies, children's arts and crafts supplies, new or gently used and clean clothing. Also needed: greeting card front covers, Campbell Soup labels and Box Tops for Education coupons (found on many nonperishable food packages) for Saint Jude's Ranch for Children, which rescues children of all races and religion from abuse, neglect and abandonment.
