News and Notes

Theophany: Baptism of Jesus Christ: On Sunday, January 5, we will mark Theophany (January 6) with the Divine Liturgy and Blessing of Water in remembrance of Jesus Christ's baptism in the Jordan River (Mark 1:9-11). In consenting to be baptized like other humans seeking cleansing from sin, Jesus identified with sinful humanity, whom he came to save. Yet it also identified him as God, as the voice of the heavenly Father named him "My beloved Son" while the Holy Spirit descended on him in the likeness of a dove. By being baptized, Jesus turned baptism into the means by which we identify with him: "All of you who were baptized into Christ have put on Christ" (Galatians 3:27). By bonding with Jesus in baptism, we too are adopted as "beloved sons and daughters" of the heavenly Father, capable of growing Christlike. The water blessed at this feast bids us to act on what God promised us in our own baptism: "I will wash you in fresh water, rid you from the filth of idols, and make you clean again. I will make you a new heart, breathe new spirit in you. I will remove your heart of stone, give you back a heart of flesh. I will give you my own spirit, to lead you in my ways, faithful to what I command." (Ezekiel 36:25-27)

Put Compassion Into Action: Jesus said how we treat those in need is how we treat him (Matthew 25:31-46). Practice the love of neighbor he commanded in his gospel (Mark 12:31) by bringing your weekly gifts to church on Sunday to help disadvantaged children, women and men locally through the Dawn Center and Westside Elementary School. Items needed: canned and nonperishable food, personal hygiene products, baby care supplies, school supplies, children's arts and crafts supplies, new or gently used and clean clothing. Also needed: greeting card front covers, Campbell Soup labels and Box Tops for Education coupons (found on many nonperishable food packages) for Saint Jude's Ranch for Children, which rescues children of all races and religion from abuse, neglect and abandonment.
