News and Notes

Nativity Fast: The Nativity Fast runs from Wednesday, November 15 through Sunday, December 24 as a season of preparation, through extra effort at almsgiving, prayer and fasting, for our celebration of Nativity, the birth of Jesus Christ, on December 25. It is also a good time to take stock of our spiritual health and clear our consciences in the sacrament of confession, available after any worship service or by appointment with our parish presbyter, Father Michael Shuster.

Saint Nicholas Prayer Services: Starting on November 15, we will hold midweek Saint Nicholas Prayer Services leading up to the feast of Saint Nicholas of Myra (December 6), a fourth-century bishop noted for his practice of charity, care for children and defense of the innocent, who has long been considered a popular patron of the people of Carpathian Rus'. Check the calendar (see above) for dates and times. After the service, we'll challenge our brain power with a simple Seven Question Quiz about our faith and spirituality. Come join us!

Thanksgiving: Thanksgiving Day falls on Thursday, November 23 this year. Amid family and feasting, make time to remember and act on its original purpose: to thank God for the many blessings and lessons he sends our way for our own good. "Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, and his love lasts forever!" (Psalm 107:1)

Put Compassion Into Action: Jesus said how we treat those in need is how we treat him (Matthew 25:31-46). Practice the love of neighbor he commanded in his gospel (Mark 12:31) by bringing your weekly gifts to church on Sunday to help disadvantaged children, women and men locally through the Dawn Center and Westside Elementary School. Items needed: canned and nonperishable food, personal hygiene products, baby care supplies, school supplies, children's arts and crafts supplies, new or gently used and clean clothing. Also needed: greeting card front covers, Campbell Soup labels and Box Tops for Education coupons (found on many nonperishable food packages) for Saint Jude's Ranch for Children, which rescues children of all races and religion from abuse, neglect and abandonment.
