News and Notes

All Souls Saturday (June 15): Join us for last All Souls Saturday of the year to pray at the 9:30 a.m. Divine Liturgy and Memorial Service for our late fathers, mothers, brothers, and sisters in Christ whom we still love, though no longer see, while we await the resurrection of the dead at the end of time. "Neither death nor life... can come between us and the love of God in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:38-39). Blessing of graves will take place afterwards.

Pentecost: "Green Sunday" (June 16): Wear your best green to the 9:30 a.m. Divine Liturgy on Pentecost, colloquially known as "Green Sunday," due to the green vestments, green altar coverings, and leafy greenery decorating the church as a reminder of what new growth God's Spirit, who descended on the newborn Church at the first Pentecost (Acts 2:1-41), can cause in our lives: "You send forth your Spirit... and you renew the face of the earth" (Psalm 104:30).

The Apostles Fast (June 24 - June 28): The Apostles Fast gives us pause for preparation for the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, chief among Jesus Christ's apostles, on June 29. It is a time for taking stock of our spiritual lives and recommitting to our apostolic faith through enhanced practice of almsgiving, prayer, and fasting, which Jesus prescribed for his followers' spiritual growth (Matthew 6:1-18).

Put Compassion Into Action: Jesus said how we treat those in need is how we treat him (Matthew 25:31-46). Practice the love of neighbor he commanded in his gospel (Mark 12:31) by bringing your weekly gifts to church on Sunday to help disadvantaged children, women and men locally through the Dawn Center and Westside Elementary School. Items needed: canned and nonperishable food, personal hygiene products, baby care supplies, school supplies, children's arts and crafts supplies, new or gently used and clean clothing. Also needed: greeting card front covers, Campbell Soup labels and Box Tops for Education coupons (found on many nonperishable food packages) for Saint Jude's Ranch for Children, which rescues children of all races and religion from abuse, neglect and abandonment.
