Dormition Fast (August 1-14): The Dormition Fast runs from August 1 through August 14 to prepare us for the Dormition of the Virgin Mary on August 15, when we remember her passage from earth to heaven at the end of her life. It is a time to enhance our efforts at almsgiving, prayer, and fasting, as well as a good occasion to take stock of our lives, admit our sins, and experience God's forgiveness in the sacrament of confession — available after any worship service or by appointment with our parish presbyter, Father Michael Shuster. Please join us for special Dormition Fast Prayer Services on Thursday, August 8 (6 p.m.) and Sunday, August 11 (3 p.m.).
Transfiguration Day (August 6): On Sunday, August 4, we will mark Transfiguration Day (August 6) with the Divine Liturgy and blessing of fruit, in remembrance of Jesus Christ's transformation into stunning light with Moses the Lawgiver and Elijah the Prophet at his side, before his followers James, John, and Peter (Matthew 17:1-9) — as a sign that he is God in human flesh and Lord of both the law and the prophets. We bless fruit on this day as a reminder that, like fruit that buds, then flowers, then ripens, we too are called to become transfigured in Christ: "We can be mirrors that brightly reflect the glory of the Lord. And as the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more like him." (2 Corinthians 3:18)
Dormition Day (August 15): On Sunday, August 18, we will mark Dormition Day (August 15) with the Divine Liturgy and blessing of flowers and herbs, in remembrance of the Virgin Mary's passge from earth to heaven at the end of her life. We bless flowers and herbs on this day as a reminder that our salvation came to full flower through the Virgin Mary when she gave birth to Jesus Christ, our savior. We too will share her blessed destiny if our lives say "yes" to God just as hers did.
Put Compassion Into Action: Jesus said how we treat those in need is how we treat him (Matthew 25:31-46). Practice the love of neighbor he commanded in his gospel (Mark 12:31) by bringing your weekly gifts to church on Sunday to help disadvantaged children, women and men locally through the Dawn Center and Westside Elementary School. Items needed: canned and nonperishable food, personal hygiene products, baby care supplies, school supplies, children's arts and crafts supplies, new or gently used and clean clothing. Also needed: greeting card front covers, Campbell Soup labels and Box Tops for Education coupons (found on many nonperishable food packages) for Saint Jude's Ranch for Children, which rescues children of all races and religion from abuse, neglect and abandonment.
Anniversaries: Congratulations to John and Nancy Gorechlad (August 13).
Birthdays: Best wishes to Russ Daniluk (August 12), Halina Belsky (August 29), and Julie Marie Shuster (August 30).
God grant them many, blessed years in health and salvation!
